History of Hanfu

Hanfu (汉服) is a traditional Chinese clothing which is often confused with a kimono Japanese by Westerners. It looks more like a tunic than a dress. In reality, Hanfu literally means "clothing of the Hans" because it was popularized by this ethnic minority. According to historians, the Hanfu have more than 3000 years of history behind them, and were invented by the Empress Leizu, the woman of the yellow emperor. She then preferred silk, more refined and sophisticated.

To be exact, the original and elementary form of Hanfu was developed more than three thousand years ago, at the time of the Shang dynasty (1600 to 1046 BC). At the time, the basic Hanfu was mainly manufactured in Chinese silk, very famous for its quality and colored mainly in green and red. The "original" hanfu consisted of three main elements:

  • Yi: Knee tunic with narrow cuffs, tied by a belt
  • Chang: A narrow ankle skirt
  • Bixi: a fabric panel with a knee attached from the waist

Hanfu has evolved considerably since its oldest form after all these centuries. The western zhou dynasty (1045 - 771 BC) introduced a class system. The more social status of a person was high, the more the dress had decorations and accessories. Social rank also had an impact on the width of the sleeves and the length of the skirt.

It is only under the eastern dynasty of the Zhou (770-256 BC) that the “shenyi”Was introduced as an important element of Hanfu. The Shenyi (深衣), literally translated by "deep dress", is a long loose garment whose left side is in the shape of a corner. Shenyi was used by everyone, regardless of sex and social class, and was an important element of Hanfu clothing to this day.

Hanfu lost its popularity during the Qing dynasty (1644-1911), at the time when the Manchu minority people reigned over China, and thus integrated Manchu fashion (mainly Qipao or Cheongsam). Then, with the collapse of the Qing dynasty, with the communist regime, China mainly adopts modern Western style clothes and Chinese clothing traditions are gradually lost.
